Fire Risk Assessments
The Fire Risk Assessment package we offer is unique in that it
predicts the progress of a design fire in your premises and
balances its effects against existing fire defences. The
comprehensive but concise report covers risks from Fire to Life,
Property, Mission Continuity, Environmental Impact, Heritage,
and Local Amenity.
Most fire risk assessment methods only go as far as evaluating
life risk to comply with current UK legislation. Fire, however,
is capable of damaging and destroying more than just lives. Any
fire, large or small, can have a devastating effect on a
business’s ability to function (Mission Continuity), or even
survive.
In addition to the report, our assessment service includes a
presentation, in person, by the survey team to the client and
ongoing technical support thereafter. The report clearly
indicates the degree of importance to be assigned to each
recommendation, taking account of the use of the building and
the people who occupy it.
The College has developed a notable client base for its
consultancy services and we will be happy to provide business
references and indemnity insurance details, as required.
The College:
The Fire Service College is a government agency and is the
principal centralised provider of operational command and fire
safety training for officers of the UK fire service.
It is the largest college of its kind in the world and has a
global reputation as a centre of excellence.
In addition to the UK fire service, the College provides
training for commerce, industry and fire brigades from all over
the world.
The Fire Service College also draws upon its considerable
resources of expertise and experience to provide Fire Risk
Assessment and other consultancy services on a commercial basis.
The Survey Team:
The survey team is comprised of uniformed instructors and
non-uniformed specialist tutors from the School of Fire Safety
Engineering at the Fire Service College..
The uniformed instructors have a wealth of fire safety
experience derived from a local authority fire brigade
background. As instructors at The Fire Service College their
subject areas cover the entire range of fire safety issues
including legislation, fire risk assessment, fire safety
practices and procedures, guidance documents and codes of practice.
The non-uniformed tutors are mostly drawn from an academic
background. They are physicists, chemists, structural and
electrical engineers – experts in the technical aspects of fire
safety engineering.
It is universally acknowledged that the teaching staff at the
Fire Service College provides a standard of training second to
none. We believe that, with this background, our risk assessment
survey team is unsurpassed in expertise, quality and experience.

The Inspection Process:
Our inspection process is derived from techniques taught to UK
fire officers which permits a detailed analysis to be made on
the suitability and the quality of existing fire safety
arrangements in the workplace and identifies any deficiencies..
Each and every factor affecting means of escape is closely
examined from the same point of view that informs the judgement
of local fire brigade inspecting officers.
The basic inspection process above, is the foundation of the
risk assessment methodology that The Fire Service College has
adopted uniquely as its own.
Originally developed in the United States as The Building Fire
Performance Evaluation Methodology, this system has been further
developed for use in the UK by the College.
Simply put, the ‘Method’ (as it has come to be known), is a
system that allows us to predict a fire’s progress through a
building from initial established burning to destruction.
This remains, to our knowledge, the only existing means of
accurately testing a building’s vulnerability to fire as well as
a means of evaluating the effectiveness of existing fire
precautions in the building.
Client Base:
Our client base includes a wide range of customers from
commerce, industry, local authorities, universities, colleges,
etc..
