THE SEMINAR
1. LEGISLATION
The first session deals with fire safety legislation. Our
objective is to explain the current situation with regard
to changing roles and responsibilities as UK fire
legislation evolves from fire certification to fire risk
assessment. The legislation content covers only those
aspects of direct concern to persons who have
responsibilities under law, however the presenters will be
able to address any specific problems or areas of concern
that delegates may have.
2. MEANS OF ESCAPE
This session deals with the inspection process itself and
will help the delegate to make informed decisions on the
suitability and the quality of fire safety arrangements in
the workplace. The factors that affect means of escape
from fire are examined in detail, giving the delegate an
insight into the aspects of fire safety, which inform the
judgment of professional fire officers.
3. A PRAGMATIC RISK ASSESSMENT METHOD
The final session looks at The Building Fire Performance
Evaluation Methodology.
This is the risk assessment method that The Fire Service
College has adopted as its own. This system is used as a
basis for teaching fire risk assessment and as a tool for
our own consultancy services. Originally developed in the
United States, the Fire Service College has refined and
adapted the system for use in the UK. Simply put, the
‘Method ’(as it has come to be known), is a system that
allows us to predict a fire ’s progress through a building
from initial established burning to destruction. Armed
with a few ‘rules of thumb ’about fire behaviour, the
delegate will be able to take away with him/her, a means
of testing their building ’s vulnerability to fire and the
effectiveness of existing fire precautions – indispensable
tools for an effective fire risk assessment.
